Sten-Mark Bachmann chosen to the Bladerider Junior Team

15 year-old Sten-Mark Bachmann (of Rein Ottoson Sailing School) was chosen to compete in the top-ranked Bladerider Junior Team, in the most challenging extreme solo sailing class: International Moth.

Sten-Mark will be participating in the Bladerider Team training camp in Melbourne from December 27th until the 31st. He will also participate in the Australian Championship, taking place between
4th - 10th January in the International Moth dinghy class.
The team will be managed by Rohan Veal, 2-time World Champion (2005, 2007) and 4 time Australian Champion.

“The knowledge and experience that Sten-Mark Bachmann will receive in the training and racing period in Australia are priceless. Very few people have the amazing opportunity to learn from a master of the sport such as Rohan Veal,” stated the young athlete’s manager, Margus Bachmann. “Sten-Mark’s goal this year is to get to the top ten in the World Championships in the International Moth dinghy class as well as defend his junior title,” added Margus Bachmann.

For three interesting years Sten Mark had been racing in the Zoom8 dinghy class. This all came to a head in 2007 when he was ranked first in the Estonian standings and in the Samsung Estonian Trophy standings, and came 6th out of 189 in the Euro Cup.

Bladerider Presentation and Test Sailing in Finland

From September 8 to 9, 2007 at the request of Int-Moth sailor Sami Jokinen we (Sten-Mark, Steina-Marta and Margus) visited Helsinki Yacht Club HSK to introduce Bladerider X8 to Finnish sailors and sailing fans.

At 9:30 on September 8, 2007 we arrived at the yacht club on our Jeep, having a launch and Sten-Mark’s Bladerider X8 (Njord - EST1) with us. The weather was exceptionally beautiful with a moderate wind of 4 to 6 m/s and people interested in sailing started to gather. After a brief overview of Bladerider, action continued in the bay in front of the yacht club. About ten people could test Bladerider on the water, the sailors of the Finnish 49er team, former sailors and simply fans among them. The big number of fans on the water was real pleasure and after Sten-Mark’s demo sail and instructions most were able to foil in a few moments. The time (circa 6 to 7 hours) passed unnoticed and on the shore we had to admit having had a busy working day. We finished the spirited day in our hotel bar sharing our impressions of the sexy Bladerider.

On the early morning of September 9, 2007 we packed the whole equipment and drove to the neighbouring yacht club. Again, the weather was fine with the wind of 6 to 8 m/s. According to the schedule there was a friendly sailing presentation to the magazine Pro Sail between the islands with different speedy dinghy classes. Formula, 49er, 18 Skiff, Int-Moth Axeman and Int-Moth Bladerider X8 took part. For Sten-Mark it was another interesting experience and a busy training day with experienced sailors.

We would like to thank Sami and all yachting fans who participated in the two-day Bladerider demo/test sail in Helsinki.
We hope that the day will come soon when Finland will have its first Bladerider X8 !

Zoom8 World Championships in Achensee, Austria

At the Zoom8 World Championships held from July 30 to August 4, 2007, Sten-Mark had to be content with the 19th place. The result was far from what had been expected. What could be the reasons of Sten-Mark’s failure?

... little experience of sailing in the conditions of a mountain lake or unfavourable weather conditions (very weak winds from variable directions) or it is simply time for Sten-Mark to pass the “baton” of Zoom8 dinghy class to the younger ...

Why not - new and exciting challenges are waiting ahead: Int-Moth and Laser Radial.

Special thanks to the organizers of the competition for a successful and memorable event !

Our gratitude to Rein Ottoson, the head coach of the Estonian Zoom8 team, who kindly shared his sailing knowledge with children and kept the restless parents in check !
